Superlattice Power Inc. is developing lithium ion batteries for electric as well as hybrid vehicles. Working with EV Innovations Inc., Superlattice Power Inc. has developed a robust lithium ion battery pack system which is tested in more than 10 vehicles for nearly 2000 miles each. However, the battery packs used in these vehicles are designed for charging rates which are lower than 0.5C. The new design developed at Superlattice Power Inc. is capable of handling more than 2.5 C rates which means the battery pack can be charged to 80% capacity in less than 30 minutes. The components and accessories that are being modified in the first prototype include charging protocol, Battery Management System, thermal management system, charger (EV Innovations' design), battery pack casing and compact, high current bus bar and electrical system.

Apart from developing the fast charge lithium ion battery pack, the other objectives of this project are to optimize the capacity and miles per fast charge in the battery pack. Research and development activities in Superlattice Power Inc. focus on the design and development of lithium ion electrode materials and cells as well as second generation Battery Management System.

The objective of Superlattice Power Inc. is to manufacture and develop the safe rechargeable lithium ion batteries for onboard energy storage in HEVs and EVs.
